Mark Calverley is the founder and Director of Blue Ocean Consulting.  After 27 years working in numerous roles within the Metocean Service Line of Fugro, Mark decided to utilise his skill set, knowledge and contacts to enable the Ocean Economy.

Following completion of his PhD on numerical modelling of water quality in Estuaries (sponsored by the regulatory authority in the UK), Mark began his career at Wimpey Environmental supporting the Clean Sweep programme in Devon.  Wimpey Environmental was acquired by Fugro and Mark continued his career with Fugro.  Over the past 27 years he has undertaken numerous coastal and ocean measurement projects around the globe, supporting a range of sectors including water, oil and gas, offshore renewables and mining.  He was involved in the design of the measurement programmes, as well as their execution and subsequent quality control and interpretation of data.

Following posts in Dubai, UAE and Houston, USA, Mark returned to the UK and took the decision to focus on consultancy work.  He held the position of director of the Fugro Metocean consultancy business for 13 years, introducing new services such as numerical modelling and Metocean process characterisation.

In 2014 Mark became the Global Innovation Manager for Fugro, with a role that required interfacing with the research community, identifying potential 3rd party funding and highlighting new technologies that may provide value to the business.  In addition he managed a software development group that included data scientists.  

Mark has been involved with many industry initiatives including:

  • Member of the Marine Industries Liaison Group (2011 to present).

  • Member of the Operational Oceanography Special Interest Group of IMarEST

  • Member of the Marine Autonomous Systems Steering Group and Regulatory Working Group (2014 to present)

  • Member of the Society of Underwater Technology London and South East Branch Committee (2012 to 2017)

  • Council Member of the Association Marine Scientific Industries (2011 to 2016)

  • EPSRC grant review panel
